Sales of the CT Migratory Bird (Duck) Stamp have generated millions of dollars to help fund the protection and preservation of wetland in CT. As a way to promote students getting involved with conservation the CT Duck Stamp Committee decided to use the winning artwork of the CT Junior Duck Stamp Contest as the image for the official stamp.
The program encourages students to explore their natural world, invites them to investigate biology and wildlife management principles, while challenging them to express and share what they have learned with others. For simplicity the CT JDS contest follows the format of the Federal Junior Duck Stamp program and is open to ALL CT students in grades K-12.
Young Connecticut artists in kindergarten through grade twelve are encouraged to submit their artwork of a waterfowl species in the Connecticut Junior Duck Stamp competition sponsored by the Connecticut Waterfowl Association (CWA). Judges for the contest consist of volunteers and artists from the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), The CWA, Delta Waterfowl, and Ducks Unlimited.
Students are judged in four groups according to grade level. Group 1 is grades K-3, Group 2 consists of grades 4-6, Group 3 is grades 7-9, and Group 4 submissions will be grades 10-12. A “Best of Show” is selected by the judges from the first-place winners from all of the 4 groups. The “Best of Show” from the CT contest will then go on to represent Connecticut in the national Junior Duck Stamp Competition. More over, The first place design will also be used as the medium for the Connecticut Migratory Bird Conservation Stamp (Duck Stamp) for the following year. Proceeds from the sale of the stamp support conservation projects and programs in the State.
